I found your blog through the post you made in the "Wasatch Trotskyist Front Announcement and Discussion Board" on facebook. I'm currently a grad student pursuing a PhD in Economics, although the program at my university takes a much more heterodox/critical approach to capitalism rather than than the orthodox bullshit taught at most universities in the US. Great commentary and blog. I’ve bookmarked your website and will continue to follow your posts,

You've just stated the main difference between those of us in deep poverty versus those who've been lucky to get that break for a job in order to get out: you had the resources to at least be able to APPEAR middle class so that you wouldn't be denied jobs. I never had even that. Those of us that never made it out of poverty don't don't have that, and never did. Which is why many like me are still poor in our middle-aged years, when any hope of ever getting a chance for a job now is futile.

Jacqueline,
I can't say I come from the generationally poor, or the chronic poor class. I've been situationally poor, though, lived through it. There was no help in my state for young, homeless, white mothers. My family couldn't help, because like me before I was widowed, they were living just above the poverty line with problems of their own. It wasn't that they didn't love me or that they didn't want to help, they couldn't. Nobody could. So I sold what little I had and moved to a state that had help available. I hadn't planned on it, didn't know it when I moved, I just moved because I was helping a friend move (not realizing that she was actually the one helping me). I was there about a year when the school realized my financial position and sent paperwork and a person to my house to explain what benefits were available to me. It was like a gift from God. I could afford a small apartment, I could get the education I needed to get a good job, I could feed my kids and take them to the doctor when they needed it. I was one of the lucky ones. This state had all the benefits, the safety net, I needed to get the tools to get a job.
You talk about the middle class like they have extra. That isn't true. We all scramble to make that utility bill, or the rent, or the unexpected doctor bill. We, like the chronically poor know that when SS gets a COLA, the rent goes up, the utilities go up, and that extra $24 per month, just got spent 10 times over.
Not all of us who climbed out of the pit of poverty have turned our backs on those who are still clawing their way through. We do what we can with what little we have until there's nothing left. I may be able to handle one car breakdown without losing everything, but that second one will take me down for sure. That is middle class. We've learned enough to appear comfortable so that we aren't rejected for jobs or help, while still wondering how long we can keep up the facade. The jobs we hold are barely a step above the ones you speak of and are marginal at best. Many times my job came before my children and doctor visits. If you want to feed them, you need a job. If they got sick or hurt while you were on schedule to work, they had to wait. Being middle class, you know what it's like to be in poverty, and you know what it's like to finally have a little breathing room.
So, no, some of us haven't forgotten.
